Sizing and designing your kitchen curtains
With the growing population, spacious homes are becoming more and more a luxury. In some of the cramped cities like New York, it is very rare to find sunlight beaming through a kitchen window. The skyscrapers going up all over the cities are making it extremely difficult to have access to direct sunlight and in an area with such closely located buildings, there is always the possibility that neighbors are snooping in on you. All the more reason why the perfect kitchen curtains are a necessary decorating item for your home. When choosing them, it is important not to lose sight of your total kitchen concept. Make sure your cabinets and countertops coordinate well with whatever curtains you choose for your kitchen. There are three important variables to consider when choosing your kitchen curtain scheme; texture, color and shape. These three variables are crucial to ensure an exceptional looking kitchen curtain.
(1) Texture
If you have chosen the French country kitchen style, you should seek out curtains in old world design. Rougher textures and more sturdy materials are accents for the French country kitchen. If your kitchen is in more of a modern design, it wouldn’t make much sense to have rough country style curtains. The best accompaniment for the modern style kitchen design would be curtains that are sleek, soft and smooth.
(2) Color
One would think that choosing the right color curtains for your kitchen should be a cinch. All you need do is match the curtain with the color of the kitchen, right? Well, this is not as simple as it sounds.
You must take into consideration that during the day, the sun will shine through the curtains creating a soft glow in your kitchen. So, green curtains may look nice on cloudy days or during the evening, but on sunny days, having your kitchen bathed in soft green light might not be very appealing. Therefore, when choosing a color, make sure to do a “sun” test by holding the fabric up to a sunny window and considering what the light does with that particular color of curtain.
(3) Shape
There are no easy answers when it comes to the shape of curtain you will need for your kitchen design. You must take a look at the size of your windows. Remember, subtlety can be disastrous to your kitchen design and bigger is not always better. If your windows are large, your best bet is a subtle kitchen curtain or else the window will dominate your whole design taking away from all the work you‘ve put into your decorating.
